Canadian musher Karen Ramstead scratched from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race Monday morning in Grayling after one of her dogs died, the first to perish in this year's race.
Race officials say she wanted to be with her family to grieve the loss of Snickers, a 6-year-old female.
Officials say the dog died at 11 p.m. Sunday at the Grayling checkpoint. Ramstead and her team of 14 dogs had arrived at the checkpoint about seven hours before Snickers died.
According to race officials, a necropsy will be conducted in an attempt to determine the cause of the dog's death.
